Animal, landscape
and the people between them.

Grazing cattle alter vegetation and redistribute nutrients. Where pressure is excessive, damaged ground, erosion and impacts on streams can follow. Teaching should place grazing within a landscape system rather than treating pasture as an unlimited feed supply.

Heritage preservation keeps attention on more than production volume. It asks what adaptations, uses and breeding families a population carries. The cattle collection also includes American Yak: its Bos grunniens biology requires its own explanation and must not be folded into a universal Bos taurus story.

This population’s place in that story.

Randall cattle preserve part of New England’s older lineback-patterned cattle heritage. Their precise ancestry remains uncertain; the conservation account associates them with the region’s mixed European foundation cattle and its tradition of multipurpose family herds.

The Randall family maintained a Vermont herd without outside crossing for more than eighty years. A remnant saved after its dispersal became the foundation of conservation breeding.

A breed’s historical setting helps explain its development. Present-day housing, feeding and land management still need to suit the individual animals and the actual site.
