ARBA recognizes the Silver Marten as both a breed name and a color term and gives a 9.5-pound maximum. The recognized varieties include Black, Chocolate, Blue and Sable. The Conservancy describes the contrasting pale areas around the eyes and beneath the body. These help explain the visual pattern, but an animal of another breed with similar markings remains that other breed. In a species-wide gallery, captions should state both breed and variety where known. That small distinction prevents a visually appealing pattern from erasing population identity.
