Recognize what makes this population itself.

These horses belong to the Appalachian gaited riding tradition, with selection for comfortable travel, useful temperament and sure-footed work over uneven ground. Chocolate coloring is strongly associated with the breed's public image, but it does not represent its entire accepted color range. Rocky Mountain and Mountain Pleasure horses are related populations with separate registry histories.
Appearance introduces the animal; a registry standard explains a documented breeding population. A photograph, color or familiar informal name alone cannot establish every individual’s membership.
