The Russian Orloff Society of USA and Canada's posted description emphasizes a strawberry-shaped comb, beard and muffs, strong brow, upright neck and substantially sloping back. Its spangled color account combines reddish-brown body feathering with dark divisions and pale tips. This gives a more complete identification than calling it a bearded red chicken.

The society also distinguishes standards used in different countries. A club's posted American description should not automatically be called proof of current APA acceptance. The site itself discusses a historical confusion between Black Russian Fowl and Orloffs. When teaching breed identity, attach the standard's source and national context, and distinguish the actual living population from an old label applied to a different bird.
