Follow the story behind the name.
The Silver Marten emerged from American Chinchilla breeding during the early 1920s after Tan ancestry had been introduced. Unusually marked offspring initially appeared as color sports. When those animals produced offspring of the same pattern, they became a foundation for a distinct breed.
A dark upper coat contrasts with lighter areas under the chin, belly, tail, and inside the ears, with pale eye rims and silver ticking. The name refers to resemblance to a wild marten's pattern. The rabbit is neither a marten nor a cross with one.
Silver Marten: a breed shaped by people
ARBA records working standards for Black and Chocolate Silver Marten in 1927, followed by Blue and Sable in 1933. The breed's influence extends beyond its own population because its name is also used for a color pattern. That creates a useful historical distinction: developing a pattern in a breed is not the same as turning every rabbit with that pattern into a member of that breed. This profile follows the Silver Marten population. When the pattern appears in another breed, that animal's own breed identity remains primary.
