The American Checkered Giant Rabbit Club describes European development under the Giant Papillon name and identifies its own establishment in 1919. ARBA likewise gives 1919 as American recognition. The club's history shows how organized fanciers helped turn an identifiable population into a continuing breed community. European names are valuable historical context, but a present-day rabbit should be described under the standard and identification actually supplied for it. The markings make an accessible entry point for readers; the full story also concerns body type, activity and the people sustaining the population.
