Domestic rabbit breeds belong to the European-rabbit species, Oryctolagus cuniculus. A breed called Belgian Hare is still a domestic rabbit breed; its common name does not make it a true hare.

Wild European rabbits can live in social colonies and complex burrow systems when suitable soil and food are available. That natural-history background helps explain the importance of shelter and behavior, but it is not a universal instruction for housing all domestic rabbits together. Breed size, individual compatibility and the managed setting matter.

Rabbits are specialized herbivores with a large cecum supporting microbial fermentation. They normally consume nutrient-rich cecotrophs, recovering nutrients produced through that process. This differs from simply eating the ordinary hard droppings people commonly notice. Diet, appetite and fecal output are therefore useful links between biology and daily observation.

A taxonomic hierarchy places an animal in biological groups. A domestic breed or strain sits within a broader species framework; it is not automatically a separate biological species. A breed’s conservation status and a wild species’ IUCN status answer different questions.

Domestic naming is not uniform across all references. One authority may use a domestic species name while another treats it within a wild ancestor. The linked GBIF record shows the naming authority and the treatment used here, checked October 4, 2026. For this world, Blanc de Hotot also has its own cultural and breeding identity.

Selection for an eye band does not reveal the whole genome

Hotot Rabbit Breeders International's account describes generations of selection among differently marked rabbits. It gives readers a history of choosing phenotypes rather than a solved molecular account of every animal. A narrow eye band is observable, whereas a genotype needs evidence appropriate to that claim. Do not extrapolate disease findings from another marked breed simply because both have white areas. Similar appearances can raise a research question, but resemblance is not a clinical diagnosis. This distinction lets the library teach selection honestly while leaving room for future breed-specific research.
