Follow the story behind the name.
Toulouse geese originated in southwestern France around the Haute-Garonne region. The name covers more than one domestic type. English imports recorded around 1840 contributed to subsequent breeding development. This profile focuses on the Dewlap Toulouse, so information about lighter production Toulouse birds should be labeled separately.
A very substantial body and a pronounced dewlap distinguish this type. The Conservancy's profile describes it as more challenging to raise than some other farm geese. Mature weights, younger market weights, and measurements from different Toulouse types should not be mixed into one unexplained figure.
Understanding the heritage in context
The word Toulouse covers distinct domestic types, making careful labeling fundamental. A claim about production Toulouse should not be silently applied to Dewlap birds. Likewise, a photo showing a visible dewlap illustrates a feature without necessarily proving registry status or exhibition lineage.
