The Rhode Island White's name can obscure its separate breeding history. Explain the recognized rose-combed form and its horizontally carried body before comparing it with white commercial layers. White feathers and brown eggs provide a clear teaching example: shell pigmentation and feather color are different traits. Conserving this breed is more precise than keeping any flock of white chickens.
