Follow the story behind the name.
Cubalayas developed in nineteenth-century Cuba through Asian and European gamefowl influences. Their American recognition in 1939 followed a history in which utility, carriage and appearance all contributed to selection.
Recognition in the American standard came in 1939, the same year Cubalayas appeared at Cleveland's International Poultry Show. Cuban breeders had combined imported Asian birds with European gamefowl rather than simply importing a finished breed.
A descending, richly feathered lobster-shaped tail and pea comb distinguish Cubalayas. Recognized American colors include black, white and black-breasted red. They are active grass foragers, suited to warm and humid settings, and often approachable with people. Physical maturation can continue well beyond the age at first reproduction.
The current Conservancy fact panel describes small-to-medium eggs with white-to-tinted shells. Its repeated older panel uses narrower wording; this account follows the current panel and keeps egg size descriptions separate from measured egg weights.
