The British standard presented by the Rare Poultry Society describes a broad, practically square body, rounded breast, flat back and moderately high full tail. This helps distinguish the Crèvecœur from a generic black crested chicken. The head combines a crest, muffling and a smooth, tapering V-shaped comb. Four toes separate it from the five-toed Houdan despite their similar French crested appearance.
