The American standard reproduced by Cochins International describes a large, rounded bird whose abundant soft feathers and down exaggerate apparent bulk. This distinction helps readers interpret photographs: a very full outline does not establish the bird's actual weight. The female's short-looking broad back and large rounded cushion partly envelop the tail, while the breast and body retain substantial breadth and depth.
