A future for a living population

What does this animal face?

American rarity does not describe every country equally. Preservation should identify the actual national population and variety rather than treating all Catalanas as one measured flock. Uncertainty about which Asian birds contributed to its development should remain explicit instead of being replaced by an overly precise foundation formula.

This is The Livestock Conservancy’s domestic-population category. It conveys conservation concern without supplying a head count. Its current list and an older breed-profile fact panel may differ; keep each label with its source.

Conservation status and source-reported population evidence

A directly verified population measure has not yet been established for this page. Its conservation category remains useful, but does not supply a current head count.

FAO’s DAD-IS keeps domestic breed information by country and maintains population-history tools. A useful statistic retains its date, geography and definition: breeding females, registrations, sampled animals and all living animals are different measures. A historical low point is meaningful history, but should not be presented as a current census.

Interactive explanation · hypothetical animals

One hundred animals.
Different breeding foundations.

Compare the same total with different numbers of breeding males and females. This simplified model illustrates why a head count alone cannot describe a population’s genetic future.

These are teaching examples, not estimates for the breed on this page. The formula assumes an idealized breeding population. Relatedness, unequal offspring contributions, changing numbers and overlapping generations require more detailed analysis. It does not predict a specific mating’s inbreeding or recommend a breeding plan.

Model basis: FAO, monitoring animal genetic resources (1992), section 4.2. Further guidance: FAO, In vivo conservation of animal genetic resources (2013).

Prat breeders and the local food tradition

The Prat breeders’ association reports that it was founded in 1985 to conserve and explain the breed and promote its poultry fair. This is a local Catalan conservation setting for the Prat population associated with the broader Catalana history. The association describes continuing involvement from the delivery of chicks through their rearing, connecting bird preservation with an established regional food tradition.

Its recommendations address bedding, ground conditions, moisture, temperature, ventilation, water quality and feeding. The protected geographical indication for Prat poultry concerns a defined product and production setting; it should not be treated as an automatic label for every Catalana chicken elsewhere. The association’s account shows one way breed conservation can remain economically and culturally active. Preserving the population involves people maintaining the birds and explaining their value, alongside the practical conditions in which they are raised.
