Follow the story behind the name.

Guernsey cattle developed on the Channel Island of the same name. Foundation animals from Brittany and Normandy were followed by generations of island selection emphasizing milk production and richness.

Channel Island herds were shaped by long selection for milk. Restrictions on imports in the early nineteenth century helped maintain an identifiable island population, followed by international exports.

Guernsey identity is strongly associated with dairy production and rich, golden-colored milk. Its history is related to, but separate from, neighboring Jersey cattle. Island origin does not mean that all Guernseys now live on the island.
