Dexters developed in southern Ireland during the early nineteenth century through selection from Kerry-related cattle. Their small size was paired with useful milk and beef production, and the histories of the two breeds remained closely connected.
Dexters developed in southern Ireland during the early nineteenth century through selection from cattle related to Kerry. For a period both populations shared a herdbook, but they remain distinct breeds.
Small stature makes Dexter cattle recognizable, yet they are multipurpose animals rather than decorative miniatures. Their background includes adaptation to difficult Irish countryside and use by smallholders seeking manageable dairy and beef cattle.
