Porter's breeder model describes Bourbon Red as a bronze-base turkey carrying two copies of recessive red. Its visual description includes dark reddish body plumage and white flight and tail areas, with a reddish bar near the end of the main tail feathers. The female can have narrow pale edging on breast feathers.

These details make identification more precise than calling any reddish turkey a Bourbon Red. A color factor can occur in other combinations, while the established variety also has a history and standard body form. Adult standard weights belong to breeding descriptions; they should not be reported as guaranteed finishing weights. The breeder page's general popularity claims are not a dated conservation census and should remain separate from official population assessments.
