The American Shropshire Registry Association’s May 2023 judging standard orders its priorities as soundness, carcass quality, breed character, general appearance and size. Its scoring assigns 30 points to soundness, 25 each to carcass quality and breed character, and ten each to general appearance and size.

The soundness section covers the mouth, topline, feet, legs and pasterns. Breed character includes a naturally clean dark face, absence of horns, white wool over the poll and a straight or slightly dished profile.

This order is a practical statement about what the breed values. Size is considered in relation to age; it is not the overriding goal. The standard connects a recognizable dark-faced, white-fleeced sheep with the sound structure and muscularity needed for its production role.
