The Karakul Shepherds Alliance documents historic, surviving foundation, imported and composite bloodlines within American Karakul sheep. Its bloodline account makes preservation of these components an explicit priority, recognizing that the breed’s variation resides across several family populations.

The directory distinguishes a historic line that no longer remains separate from descendants maintained in newer flocks. It also documents linebred and multi-bloodline composite flocks. These categories help explain why a flock’s disappearance does not always mean every descendant is gone, while dispersal can still make a distinct line harder to maintain.

Preserving several bloodlines retains options for future breeding and use. A composite flock and a separately maintained foundation line make different contributions to that goal. The alliance’s changing directory is a record of conservation work, rather than a fixed national census.
