A distinctive bill invites a simple observation question: does the individual take food and water comfortably with the equipment supplied? This is a practical suitability check based on visible conformation, not evidence that all Hookbills have a special feeding disorder. Feed access and the cleanliness of water equipment matter for any duck.

General duck biology remains the foundation. Cornell describes the importance of dry shelter, drainage, suitable flooring, and feeding equipment that accommodates a duck's bill. Historic skill at obtaining food from canals should not be translated into a claim that a confined modern flock needs no balanced feed. A waterway's available food and risks change with season, density, and surrounding land use.
