Reading the breed's identity
Knowledge for understanding and preserving Australian Spotted.
The Australian Spotted's small scale is a defining feature, not a reason to compare it directly with a heavy market duck. Its approximately horizontal body, oval head, and comparatively streamlined face separate its outline from the rounder head and cheek shape associated with Call ducks. The Conservancy describes an average around two pounds. This is a breed-level description, not a growth target for every bird.
Greenhead, Bluehead, and Silverhead identify different color varieties within the breed. A useful illustrated account should show the whole bird and identify its variety and sex. Close photographs of a spotted feather or a green head cannot establish breed identity on their own. This distinction helps readers understand why maintaining a breed requires more than saving a visually similar small duck.
