Polish chickens demonstrate why an eye-catching crest should be interpreted as one feature within a living population. Their name does not resolve every question about foundation geography. When teaching varieties, show the relation between crest pattern and body color carefully. Practical flock observation matters: plumage presentation should complement, rather than replace, attention to the bird's ability to use its surroundings.
