The Poultry Club describes controversy after Major Croad's Langshan imports: some observers confused the dark birds with Black Cochins, while others recognized a distinct Chinese population. A Croad Langshan club formed in 1904 specifically to maintain the original type. This is evidence of deliberate protection against dilution of identity.
