A breeder's account of developing Blue Jersey Giants
Knowledge for understanding and preserving Jersey Giant.
Golda Miller, a former National Jersey Giant Club president, described the development of her Blue Giants in a 1998 breeder article. She recalled an unusual White hen with gray feathers and the decision to lend that bird to Leo Prokop. The first offspring were varied in color; further mating with a Black male produced more promising birds, after which Miller brought the original hen and some descendants home.
The account is valuable primary testimony about one breeder's stock and sequence of decisions. It also rejects the idea that simply crossing any White Giant with any Black Giant will reliably create Blue Giants. White appearance can conceal different underlying genetic situations, so color labels alone are an inadequate breeding recipe. Miller's observations explain her line's development; they do not establish that every Blue Giant descends from that particular hen or provide a complete molecular explanation.
