Two Holland color-development paths

Knowledge for understanding and preserving Holland.

Illinois Extension distinguishes the foundations of White and Barred Hollands. Its history connects White Hollands with imported Dutch birds and several American utility breeds; the barred population followed another selection program involving Leghorns, Plymouth Rocks and Australorps. The shared goal was a useful meat-and-egg bird with white eggs. The name therefore refers to an American breeding project with Dutch connections, rather than every chicken raised in the Netherlands.
