Buckeye conservation should connect Nettie Metcalf's breeding work with the actual bird: muscular form, pea comb, mahogany color and outdoor activity. A similarly colored chicken does not represent the same population. When teaching its practical role, include ranging and maternal behavior rather than reducing success to a show color or a broiler finishing schedule.
