The Lincoln Red Cattle Society describes a breed that moved from dual-purpose use toward beef production while retaining maternal and milking characteristics. Its association was formed in 1895 and began publishing a herd book in 1896.

The society also recounts development of polled cattle beginning in 1939 and later breed-development work. Alongside that broader history, it identifies Original Population Lincoln Reds as a population monitored with the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.

These strands need to remain distinct when discussing preservation. Evidence about the entire modern Lincoln Red breed does not necessarily describe the size or diversity of its Original Population component. The original lines preserve an identifiable ancestry resource within a breed whose wider selection history has continued to change. International movement of genetic material is also part of the society’s account of maintaining and using the breed.
